Summary

Considered by many to be Dickens' finest novel, Great Expectations traces the growth of the book's narrator, Philip Pirrip (Pip), from a boy of shallow dreams to a man with depth of character。 From its famous dramatic opening on the bleak Kentish marshes, the story abounds with some of Dickens' most memorable characters。 Among them are the kindly blacksmith Joe Gargery, the mysterious convict Abel Magwitch, the eccentric Miss Haversham and her beautiful ward Estella, Pip's good-hearted room-mate Herbert Pocket and the pompous Pumblechook。 As Pip unravels the truth behind his own 'great expectations' in his quest to become a gentleman, the mysteries of the past and the convolutions of fate through a series of thrilling adventures serve to steer him towards maturity and his most important discovery of all - the truth about himself。

Who doesn't love a cinderella story? A tale, from rags to riches, wouldn't that be satisfying? - you'd think, glancing at the title - But, let me ask you again, wouldn't that be satisfying? I'm pretty sure that if you could answer, you'd answer with a resounding yes, and that's why this book exists for you in the first place。 I had great expectations, alas what happened belongs to a separate and distinct realm of unexpected。 Who doesn't love a cinderella story? Great Expectations is one of the most influential works of English literature, written by Charles Dickens and first serialised into All The Year Round (Dickens' own magazine), it tells the story of Pip, a Victorian village lad who is destined to become a blacksmith but dreams to become a gentleman。The novel is narrated by Pip himself。 The novel is a rollercoaster ride, at times it is heartwarming and at times really dark。The best thing about this novel is that it only gets better as the pages ar Great Expectations is one of the most influential works of English literature, written by Charles Dickens and first serialised into All The Year Round (Dickens' own magazine), it tells the story of Pip, a Victorian village lad who is destined to become a blacksmith but dreams to become a gentleman。The novel is narrated by Pip himself。 The novel is a rollercoaster ride, at times it is heartwarming and at times really dark。The best thing about this novel is that it only gets better as the pages are turned。 It is filled with a lot of suspense and plot twists (especially in the last volume) which lefts the reader in an awe。Yeah, it was hard for me to get through it thanks to the hard language, so hard sometimes that I had to read summaries of its chapters from internet but the joy of reading it was amazing。 The characters and the story are more than great and really iconic。 Volume 1 Volume 1 tells the story of Pip, the child。 This volume is the slowest and the most confusing of the three but once you complete it and move on and try to remember it again it is what will bring tears to your eyes。 Volume 2 Volume 2 tells the story of Pip in his teenage。 The remarkable thing about it is the development of Pip's character and the overall story。 It is a new stage in Pip's life in which we see our dear protagonist and his surroundings change。 Plus the best thing about this volume is "Herbert Pocket" who makes this volume quite heartwarming。 Volume 3 Now comes the most exciting of 'em all。 Volume 3 tells the story of an adult Pip。 This one contains the most plot twists and the most "awe" moments in the whole book。 And frankly speaking, if it wasn't for this volume, I wouldn't have give this novel 5 stars。I'll recommend anyone to surely read it but don't expect that it'll make you love it the very first time but read it slowly enjoying all the phrases, story and characters and soon you'll have delved deep inside it and you won't even realise! 。。。more

First-class narration from Dickens as always。I really disliked Pip for how ungrateful he was to Joe and his convict and what a simp he is to Estella, and when I dislike the protagonist, I can't say that I enjoyed the book。 But it was well-written, so 4 stars First-class narration from Dickens as always。I really disliked Pip for how ungrateful he was to Joe and his convict and what a simp he is to Estella, and when I dislike the protagonist, I can't say that I enjoyed the book。 But it was well-written, so 4 stars 。。。more

Most of the books I've read for school have been depressing and plain boring。 This one is different (probably because it's Dickens)。 I've only read his "Tale of Two Cities" besides "Great Expectations," and I've found that his writing is quite difficult to read, but his stories are GOOD。 GE was very intricate and posed many cliffhangers that compelled me to read on。 The interwovenness of the characters and situations was fabulous and very Dickensian。 I especially enjoyed Pip's character developm Most of the books I've read for school have been depressing and plain boring。 This one is different (probably because it's Dickens)。 I've only read his "Tale of Two Cities" besides "Great Expectations," and I've found that his writing is quite difficult to read, but his stories are GOOD。 GE was very intricate and posed many cliffhangers that compelled me to read on。 The interwovenness of the characters and situations was fabulous and very Dickensian。 I especially enjoyed Pip's character development and how he returns to his hometown at the very end with a more elevated perspective after all his experiences and adventures。 It was also very interesting to see the narrator Pip's nuanced judgement in the young Pip's life events。 Anyhow, I will not be rereading GE in the near future because it was so hard to read, but it was a very rewarding novel。 。。。more

I catch a lot of flack for not hating this book, as many people I know despise it。 I feel that it is a good story, but just simply a bit lengthy for no other aspect other than that Dickens wanted a lengthy story。 I feel a lot of the middle story can be lopped out, whilst you miss nothing and yet still retain a good story。 I would put this book on my shelf, but not recommend it to everyone。

You don’t need a review of a book this iconic from a reviewer this unremarkable, but perhaps leaning too heavily on Implausible Coincidence Twist for my liking。 You could get away with it in ‘Bleak House’ where you were following loads of characters without knowing the link; less so in a first party narrative。 But hey, it’s always a pleasure to read Dickens’ writing, coloured here by the bizarre gothic interludes at Miss Havisham’s dilapidated mansion and carried by the strength of the wit and t You don’t need a review of a book this iconic from a reviewer this unremarkable, but perhaps leaning too heavily on Implausible Coincidence Twist for my liking。 You could get away with it in ‘Bleak House’ where you were following loads of characters without knowing the link; less so in a first party narrative。 But hey, it’s always a pleasure to read Dickens’ writing, coloured here by the bizarre gothic interludes at Miss Havisham’s dilapidated mansion and carried by the strength of the wit and the characterisation。 。。。more

It’s always hard to read a book or hear a story where folks are making things harder for themselves than they should。 Because that’s such a human thing to do sometimes。 While I didn’t love reading that, there’s no doubting why Dickens is a classic。 Loved the beginning and the ending, but the middle was kind of a trudge to get through。

I didn't really understand half of what they said because of the language they used。 I also found the ending quite disappointing because it made the whole journey he went through pointless and futile。 I didn't really understand half of what they said because of the language they used。 I also found the ending quite disappointing because it made the whole journey he went through pointless and futile。 。。。more

Honestly, this was quite an exhausting read and it went on for too long。 However, it gets a decent rating for the interesting characters and the undeniably beautiful prose。

I listened to this book。 I read this book as a teenager and the scenes of Miss Havisham's wedding cake and dress have stuck with me。 I wanted to revisit it and was surprised to find out there was a lot more to the story。 Pip's journey from childhood to an adult with all the memorable characters including Joe, Pip's sister, Estella, Herbert and others is interesting。 There were parts that were quite funny and I chuckled to myself as I listened。 I listened to this book。 I read this book as a teenager and the scenes of Miss Havisham's wedding cake and dress have stuck with me。 I wanted to revisit it and was surprised to find out there was a lot more to the story。 Pip's journey from childhood to an adult with all the memorable characters including Joe, Pip's sister, Estella, Herbert and others is interesting。 There were parts that were quite funny and I chuckled to myself as I listened。 。。。more

Excellent and still timely。

Loved it right off。 Then slogged through the middle to the point where I was doubting things would pick back up again。 Finally around chapter 40 things got interesting again and I ended up liking it。 I like the way Dickens can illustrate big ideas through his stories and highlight issues in society that are still relevant today。 Occasionally I had moments where I thought, “I think this would be funny if I had the context of Victorian England,” but you can’t help when you’re born!

Mark

amazing。 sad to admit I first read this now。 but the relevance and writing, genius。

。。。more
